Tongue Teasers – Dog Treats

Today was a good day…no, a great day. This afternoon my mom decided to cook something. It seemed a bit too early for their dinner, but she was using some of the usual ingredients – vegetables, rice, cheese – you know, human food. I decided to go upstairs to relax on my super comfy green couch to avoid being tempted by the food – it is just so hard sometimes. Anyway, I guess I dozed off because about 15 minutes later I was woken up by a delicious smell. I ran downstairs and to my surprise I was greeted by a warm treat right out of the oven – strange indeed. The smell was very indicative of the taste – fresh vegetables, a hint of egg, cheese and even a bit of applesauce all wrapped up into one warm, soft cookie. And, they say it’s healthy for us so you better behave and maybe your mom might bake you one too. What a T-R-E-A-T! (Like we don’t know what it means when they spell things out…)

And, thanks to Kat at See Spot Eat – please keep sharing these wonderful dog recipes like these Tongue Teasers.

Benny is the coolest pup you’ll meet. With a built-in radar for dog parks, impeccable treat tasting capabilities, an expansive vocabulary and strong squirrel sensors, he was a no-brainer for the writer of our dog product reviews. Being the rescue who inspired Adrian’s dog photography, expect to see a lot of him around here!

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

Have you seen Hachi: A Dog’s Tale yet? It’s a movie based on a true story about a pup named Hachi. It’s a sweet family film that celebrates the deep, unique bond our dogs form with us. Hachi’s undying loyalty will leave you with teary eyes (or swollen eyes in my case because I cried so much) and feeling inspired. I recommend it for any animal lover (that has tissue near by)!

Healthy Dogs – Wednesdays with Laura

Some of you may have heard of Doctors Without Borders, an international non-profit organization that provides medical help to people living in countries plagued by armed conflict, natural disasters, malnutrition, and epidemics. Well, there is also an organization called Veterinarians Without Borders that is dedicated  to “restoring the healthy natural balance between animals, people and the earth.” Volunteer veterinarians educate and train developing communities to care for animals and learn about the connections between animal care and human health. The recent issue of Modern Dog magazine has an extensive article about a veterinarian’s experience performing surgery on a dog in Todos Santos, Guatemala. The article will give you an insight into this field of important animal health and safety work.

As well, this month’s Animal Wellness is a special green issue with articles about eco-friendly pet products, landscaping tips for pet owners, and ways to reduce your dog’s exposure to toxins. The article provides a list of plants, foods, medications and common household products that are detrimental to your dog’s health. One easy way to improve your dog’s health (physically and mentally) is to get outside, and with this beautiful weather who doesn’t want to be outside!

Laura is the studio manager for Adrian Hitt Photography. She keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes and frequents the blog often with her tips on what’s going on in the dog world. In addition to her work at here, Laura is exploring her interests in urban and environmental planning and enjoys sewing, paper crafts, gardening, photography and cooking. Laura lives in East Nashville and one day hopes to adopt a dog as sweet as Benny!

Animal Chiropractic… A short History lesson

When I tell people that I am an animal chiropractor I get many different responses. Usually the person smiles and says, that is so interesting; I had no idea that was even possible. Then they ask me how do you adjust a dog? How would I know if my dog needs an adjustment? Do you adjust any other animals? Where do you adjust the animals?

All of these are fantastic questions and I will begin with a little history of Animal Chiropractic:

Chiropractic is an art, science and philosophy, which focuses on the relationship between the alignment of the spine and the function of the nervous system, and the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

Manipulation has been in existence since 2000BC, but it was DD Palmer who announced the discovery of chiropractic in 1895. He set up the Palmer Infirmary of chiropractic cure in Iowa after he adjusted Harvey Lillard – a school janitor who had become deaf following an incident in previous years.

DD Palmer’s son, BJ promoted the chiropractic profession and began adjusting animals back in the 1940’s. Animal chiropractic is a broadening of human chiropractic with techniques developed to be able to treat animals. The same philosophy, science and art is applied to the animal as with the human, with certain adaptations according to the variations in their anatomy.

Recognition of Animal chiropractic began when the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association was established and this led to the development of the Options for Animals education program which started in 1992. The world quarters for the Options for Animals course is currently based in Wellsville, Kansas, USA.

In 2008, I obtained my degree from Options for Animals and IVCA certification. I firmly believe that when conventional veterinary medicine doesn’t have all the answers, it’s time to ask different questions. Chiropractic can be an answer to your pet’s unanswered health questions. There are natural ways to treat illness that can strengthen your dog’s natural defenses to help your pup get or stay well. I look forward to continually sharing stories and insights with you here! Feel free to leave a comment with your questions.

Through personal experience with the healing art of chiropractic care, Dr. Inman decided her career. She is now a certified animal chiropractor who believes in the importance of wellness care and alternative treatments for animals. Dr. Inman runs Richland Animal Chiropractic and is available by appointment to adjust dogs, cats, horses and all other creatures in need of assistance. She also makes house calls! Her dog Sophie is the silly, fluffy, red love of her life.

I totally believe in chiropractic work on animals! I’ve witnessed its powers and have heard my dog sigh with relief after an adjustment, This was after another vet tried “conventional” meds that just didn’t work. How could they when my dogs neck and shoulder were out of place. My cats received chiro care as well and were purring the whole time! Acupuncture works wonders as well. Thanks for sharing the history.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – Golden Retriever Mix

Meet Lucy. She’s named after the great Lucille Ball for her red her, but I sung this classic Beatles song to her when we met. Either way, I like both Lucille Ball and the Beatles and especially this little one. I met her this past Friday and she is looking for a home. She is beautiful, sweet and spunky. Let me tell you, I fell in love with this little lady! She was found abandoned in a warehouse and was nursed back to health by 2 very kind Nashvillians. Lucy is 11 weeks old and we think she’ll be a large, medium-sized dog. If you are interested in giving her a loving home, contact us or leave a comment and we’ll put you in touch with her!
