Giving to those who give

Selecting the perfect gift is tough. When I really stop to think about it, it is so tough because we are so fortunate to have life’s necessities and pleasures already in our lives. A great way to gift is by donating in someone’s honor to a cause that either you or your recipient feels strongly about. I thought I would share some wonderful organizations with incredible missions.

Santa Clarita, CA
Mission
: To rescue, rehabilitate and give sanctuary to abused animals. Through the interaction with our animals children learn reverence for all life.

The Gentle Barn is home to horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, dogs, and cats that have all been rescued from severe abuse. They have been rehabilitated and regained their trust in humankind by realizing that they are now loved, and their abuse is over. I love this quote, “We believe that everyone deserves a chance at life, regardless if they are blind, crippled, deformed, sick, wounded, or just old. At The Gentle Barn, the animals leave when they are done, not when someone is done with them!” The Gentle Barn offers a unique 10-month peace enhancement therapy program that connects rescued and rehabilitated farm animals with inner-city, at-risk, and special-needs kids who can relate to the animals’ histories of abuse, enabling them to find healing of their own.

Make sure to visit The Gentle Barn website and browse around. They have a variety of ways to donate. What an honor it is to be able to support a cause as great as this.

Lebanon, TN
Mission: New Leash On Life is dedicated to improving the welfare of companion animals in our community through shelter, placement, spay/neuter, education and awareness.

The New Leash On Life family of programs includes:
Almost Home – Cat and Dog Adoption Center located in Lebanon, TN
Fix for Life – Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic
The Spay Station – Mobile Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic
Snip & Tip – Tip/Neuter/Return program for feral cat populations

Our Friends at New Leash On Life are simply wonderful. The organization was hit hard by the 2010 Nashville Floods, let’s support them as they continue to move ahead with their spay/neuter initiatives and no-kill shelter!  NLOL accepts monetary donations for The Angel Fund (cat and dog medical treatment fund) and The Guardian Gild (various donation levels available) and also has a Wish List of much needed items.

We hope you enjoy the holidays!

Picking Your Christmas Puppy

Imagine coming down the steps Christmas morning and finding a wiggly, furry friend under the tree. Many children and adults will be greeted by this wonderful gift this year. Christmas puppies can be a rewarding present if proper research and time are committed to the puppy from the beginning. So how do you go about adding a new family member in this busy season? Here are a few beginning steps for picking your new puppy this Christmas.

Now is the time to start researching your new furry friend. Begin by choosing a breed that will best fit your family’s activity level and personality.

  • Very active families might like a breed such as a Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepard or even a small dog such as a Jack Russell Terrier. Breeds such as these will be willing to run for hours at a time or be happy to join in for a day trip to the lake. Be prepared to invest time and training into your active puppy.
  • A calm and laid back family might enjoy a calmer dog such as a Shih Tzu, Great Dane, or Basset Hound. These dogs, once past the puppy months, are generally happy to lounge around after their daily walk.

Once you have researched your family’s ideal breed, it is time to find him! If you are looking for a specific breed, Petfinder is the perfect place to look! You can type in your specific breed and narrow it by geographic location. The results will show various shelters and rescues that are looking to place dogs. Of course, you could also visit local shelters or rescues to see if a particular dog speaks to you. You might be surprised how many pure breeds are there! (And of course you know, we all love mixes.) Adrian Hitt Dogography offers a great dog resource page that highlights such places. And don’t forget that the Twelve Dogs of Christmas are still looking for homes – maybe yours!

Why adopt instead of purchase from a breeder? There are many reasons, but know that by adopting you not only save the life of your dog, but of another by freeing up a space for her to get off of the streets.

You have now found your puppy and have reserved it for the holidays! Go ahead and discuss with the family everyone’s individual responsibilities for the puppy once she comes home. Make sure everyone in the family has a part in feeding, training, and walking the puppy. (Remember that young children will have to be supervised in their puppy responsibilities.)

Your new dog will become a loved and cherished member of the family in no time. With proper training and care your puppy will become a loving, obedient, and loyal family companion.

Have a nice holiday season!

Katie’s Dog Training offers private, in-home training sessions so that you can experience the loyalty and companionship that a well balanced dog offers. Even though she has graduated numerous training schools, the dogs themselves tend to be her most beneficial teachers. She and her husband share their home with three wonderful dogs, Luka, Jazzy and Honey as well as a crazy cat named D’Angelo.

On the Thirteenth Day of Christmas…

I know, it was only supposed to be The 12 Dogs of Christmas but I couldn’t forget this pooch! Danny is a Lab mix that is 8 months old. Like, Dina, he has been at Nashville Humane for a while and has a special adoption fee of only $25. He is a typical older pup that is full of energy, excitement, love and kisses. He’s a big fan of rawhides, making you smile and sitting on your lap. Danny is an amazing boy who deserves an amazing home! Besides finding him at NHA you can also see him on Comcast OnDemand.

Thank you everyone for considering these dogs and passing along to your friends! We will update once we know they have new homes! A very merry Christmas to you!

I am so happy to see Danny featured on your site!! I volunteer at the Humane Society and he has been one of my favorite dogs of all time– he’s a ball of love and it breaks my heart to keep seeing him there every weekend. If I had any more space, I would have taken him home weeks ago. Hopefully someone will see his sweet face and make him the happiest Christmas puppy ever. Thanks again for giving him the extra shot at finding a good home!

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas…

Our Twelfth dog of Christmas is probably my favorite! … Of course not counting Rudy:) Meet Drake, a Basset Lab mix! When I saw him, I just couldn’t pass him up. What a unique looking dog! I just laugh every time I see his photo. Besides his goofy looks, what can one say about a Basset mix? He was found as a stray so not much is known about his history. After his temperament test, the NHA animal care staff feels he would do best as an only pet in a home with older children. He’s an active guy who LOVES walking and sniffing everything in sight. Put a leash on this guy, take him hiking and he’ll love you forever! Drake’s adoption fee is $75.

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas…

Our eleventh dog of Christmas is actually a pair of Chihuahuas! Sonny & Cher are two peas in a pod who rely on each other. The staff at Nashville Humane is doing their best to adopt them together since that’s all they know. If you put them on a scale, they wouldn’t even weigh 20 pounds together! They are also typical chihuahia’s who would do best in a home with older children. They are not a fan of screaming toddlers, but then again, who is? 😉   They are both nine months old and were brought to Nashville Humane because their previous owners were neglecting them. An understanding home with an owner singing “I Got You Babe” is all they really need this Christmas! Sonny & Cher’s adoption fee is $85 each.

I just love checking in to see who the next ‘pup’ of Christmas will be! Can you let us know after the holidays if all of these cuties were able to find forever homes? I would love to take one with me, but my hands are just so full with our Ally. One day….. :)

If we didn’t have a 1-year-old, I would snap up these pups so fast… We already have 2 Chihuahuas, and I think they’d all have a blast together. I hope they find a home soon!
