Shih Tzu

The smart dog quickly discovers that, to get what he wants, one mournful look is much more effective than a frenzy of barking.

First Annual Made in the Shade Day

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer! Within the past week, temperatures have reached a scorching 97 degrees, prompting people and their pets to seek relief in nearby shade. But some dogs are not so lucky – their dog days of summer consist of braving the heat outside all day with little or no shade. These conditions can be particularly dangerous to dogs since it can result in sunburns, heat exhaustion, and even death. The Middle Tennessee Pet Resource Center wants to give pet owners the resources required to prevent these tragedies, but they need our help!

On Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MTPRC’s will host its First Annual Made in the Shade Day. Throughout the day, they will provide free tarps, bungee cords, and water bowls to pets at risk in the East and North Nashville areas. To make this event a success, MTPRC is asking for volunteers and donations – whether it’s just a couple of bucks or a tarp. To find out how you can volunteer or donate, please email webmaster@mtprc.org.

And also, make sure that your own pet isn’t at risk. Be aware of the length of time you leave your pet outdoors in extreme heat or how long your daily walks are during the summer. Most importantly, always provide ample amount of shade and easy access to water for your furry friend!

Peace, Sweet Garcia

Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.

AGNUS SLIGH TURNBULL

Yesterday, we received word that Garcia, an English Sheepdog passed on to Heaven. He was an absolute gentleman that was loved deeply by his family. He lived to be 10 years old, which was just not enough time to enjoy his sweet soul. I know that he is sorely missed. His mom is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know, and it breaks my heart to know of this great loss. I hope the memories of his life are vivid for you and that Garcia is like a young pup again – with sight to boot! (And I’m sure he finally got his opposable thumbs:))

And Garcia, thank you for your love. May you forever run and enjoy the shade of squirrel-filled trees.

Commercial Pet Photographer

Did you pick up the Pet issue of Nashville Lifestyles? Today is the last day to grab it from the stands, but I wanted to share a few more favorite photos from our dog session. Buddy is such a quirky Jack Russell Terrier! His dog mom, Dana, showed me photos of his “dinner party” that he has each evening when he eats. He gathers all of his pet toys and sits them around his food bowl during dinner time. His Kong always gets the coveted seat – inside the food bowl. Dogs crack me up! Buddy was such a good model for the cover and I look forward to seeing him again in the future!
